Christie’s held an an auction of mostly important Chinese works of art from the Property of the Ping Y. Tai Foundation. It started yesterday, December 2 and ended today in Hong Kong. Avid collectors around the globe were given this very rare chance of acquiring exceptional chinese antiques from two well respected connoisseurs in the art and antique world, Ping Y and J.T. Tai.
From the exquisite and valuable collection, one of the highlights of the sale was a stunning “Imperial Pink-Ground Rose ‘Butterfly’ Vase from the 16th century. It has a very rare design with a very impressive provenance. Naturally and as expected for a rare vase such as this one, they will be able to fetch a very high price and they did.
Christie’s was able to get HK$53,300,000.00 or around US$6,910,377.00 for the pink Qianlong butterfly vase.
We often see butterflies painted on vases but rarely on a color background such as this one. This spectacular vase was even more enhanced by the color that was used. The soft pink is so easy on the eyes and it doubly reinforces the word dainty which often is related to vases or porcelains.
A lot of people envy the former owners of this rare beauty and kept speculating that the Tai couple who belonged in the elite Chinese community in New York would probably not miss their homeland that much since they were surrounded by exceptional Chinese works of art in their western home.
